SCC's Comics Talk
SCC did not get a fan booth in 2025, so we hung out at Playbox Studios booth, and spent time catching up with SCC members.
Superheroes have been the staple of the modern comics since the late 1930s. Superheroes, and their opposite counterparts, the supervillains, have been referred to as Modern Myths of today by Laurence Maslon, the author of “Superheroes!”. Superheroes and villains embody archetypes, just like gods of the ancient world, notably Greek and Norse; They represent hopes, fears, and values, making them relatable but also larger-than-life. Their motivations and powers intrigue us, while their stories (often) involving transformation, tragedy, or destiny, keep us riveted. Powers, costumes, and symbols of comic heroes and villains also carry meaning; They represent ideas, or aspects of human nature. Comic stories often feature battles between good and evil, mirroring the eternal conflicts in mythology. By exploring superheroes and their counterparts at this exhibition we can gain a deeper understanding of their significance and the role they play in our collective imagination. At this exhibition, we also host a...
Heroes. They capture our imagination. They intrigue us, and they inspire us. They rise above us and, in so doing, remind us to look upwards to reach beyond and stretch ourselves, to be more than we can be. Heroes make us ask what qualities define them, what sets them apart from the rest of us and, more importantly, what makes them Super. Through this exhibition, we endeavor to provide answers to these intriguing questions as we explore the different heroes depicted in the comics. These heroes are different and come from diverse makeups, backgrounds, and experiences. But they also share common characteristics and ideals. Explore these questions with us and be inspired to join the hero club! Capes are optional! This year our exhibition focuses on Diversity in Comics.
Many new superhero fans have been introduced to the genre via movies and tv series. This year's exhibition shows off source material and their association to these movies and tv series, ie comics and original art, and other collectibles such as colour guides, movie / tv memorabilia, toys / statues as well as replica props. The wide variety of exhibits caters to different types of fans and collectors in the hobby. Fans engagement in the form of Art Contest and Art Jam are well received as well.

There’s also a comic strip contest, featuring both their mascots, with a cash prize of S$100 and other goodies to be won! Here are some notable entries:Asian artists have played a significant role in the mainstream comics industry, centered around the largest publishers based in the United States. Artists, notably from the Philippines, such as Rudy Nebres, Tony DeZuniga, Nestor Redondo and Ernie Chan have drawn and inked for Marvel and DC comics since the 1970’s, blazing the way as pioneers in this competitive field. Following in the footsteps of these legends, modern artists from the region like Mico Suayan, Rian Gonzales, Sonny Liew, Stanley (Artgerm) Lau, Zu Orzu, Yasmin Putri, Ario Anindito, In-Hyuk Lee, Kim Jung Gi and Sana Takeda are counted amongst the most popular and talented comic creatives working today. Original regional comics also play a major role in Hong Kong and Japan; where manhua and manga inspire major movies and animated series. Wonderful stories uniquely told by Asian creators that inspire even global audiences and have influenced western comic creators. Manhua and Manga...
We are pleased to announce that SCC's Comics Exhibition at STGCC this year is another massive success. With this exhibition, we generated interest to make comics a larger and more important part of STGCC. The idea is to get fans excited to read comics again. The exhibition will showcase some rare slabbed comics around the theme of “First appearances of Movie/TV Heroes”. For fans of characters such as The Flash, Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Spider-man, Captain America or Wolverine, you can come see the issues where they appeared for the very first time - in some cases over 60-70 years ago.
We are pleased to announce that the Art Side and SCC's Original Comic Art Exhibition at STGCC this year is a massive success. As many comic collectors are aware, original comic art is a growing extension of comic collecting. More and more comic fans are now collecting comic art, from sketches to blank cover art to commissions to published pages. At the Original Comic Art Exhibition, many types of such original comic art belonging to local comic art collectors is on display. The original comic art we are referring to are original works drawn by artists on over-sized boards that are subsequently coloured, printed and made into comic books - i.e. the unique 'masters' and valuable one-of-a-kind pieces. The Original Comic Art Exhibition informed and educated attendees on the various stages of production for a comic book and provide examples of the different types of original comic art, as well as...
Adam, which of your past projects did you enjoy doing the most? Why? Adam: My 4 year cover run on Catwoman, because Catwoman can be both dangerous and funny, and I found that combination appealing. While you are known for the ladies on the covers, what male character do you love to draw? Adam: What's a Male Character? (Joking) What is the best cover you have drawn? Adam: huh- I don't know quite what to say. Tell them Supergirl on the meteor. It's near the top - I don't look at it and hate it. But I don't really have a favorite or one I'd consider the best. Do you love Star Wars? If so, which is your favourite character? Adam (turning to the life sized replica of the Darth Vader helmet in our living room): A little. As for favorite character: It's gotta be Luke. Hi Adam, I love your...
Who are the artists (both within and outside of comic books) who influenced your style? I tried to emulate a lot of the comic artists I read, as a kid, from John Byrne to John Romita Jr, and others. It was pretty much how I learned to draw, though eventually I realized that I needed to do more than just copy, and moved into trying to understand the structure of things before applying that final surface layer of 'style'. It's what I try to tell everyone who asks me to look at their portfolio of work. It's important to understand the foundation of something. I tell them not to focus on the cool rendering details because if the underlying drawing is broken, it won't matter how you dress it up, it'll always be broken. All the brightest paint colors won't mend a crooked wall. Do you think that comic book artists...
To those who have yet to make the voyage to San Diego Comic Con, you might have the idea that it is a Mecca for all-things ‘geek’. You would be half right as those who have gone in the last few years will tell you its actually more like Mecca at the top of Mt. Everest. And like the real Everest, you need to prepare yourself mentally and physically even if you have a lot of money to throw at the prospective expedition. Trying to get a pass now is basically the digital version of the Hunger Games. You pray for the odds to be in your favor. For my first visit to SDCC, all i had to do was send a fax and mail a cheque. If you are lucky enough to buy a pass for yourself, here is how to prepare for your first foray into what is now...
As Singapore gears up for STGCC and the General Elections in September, the region is going abuzz with comic and toy conventions, which gives you an idea of the kind of creatives we have in Southeast Asia and the big money that is generated through pop culture. For some of us, pop matters more than politics. In the month of August itself, two major conventions took place in Jakarta, Indonesia and in Metro Manila, the Philippines. The latter was held Komikon Indieket 2015 at Pasig City while the city of Jakarta played host to Popcon Asia 2015. I had the privilege to attend Popcon Asia 2015, which was a great event for local comics and original IP. Held over three days at the Jakarta Convention Centre, this was my second time to Popcon and it was bigger than ever. Estimates given were that 37,000 attended this 4th edition of Popcon as...
