We are pleased to announce that SCC will be having a Sketchcards Meet & Trade / Scavenger Hunt at STGCC this year. You are most welcome to join us; Whether you want to participate as an artist / sketchcard contributor, a Sketchcards Hunter, or you just want to own a couple to start your own Sketchcards collection, comeby our booth.

SCC would like to thank STGCC for making this presentation possible with logistics and other in-kind support.

Why you should join us at STGCC 2018:

  1. What you can expect at the SCC Sketchcards Meet & Trade
    • Collect sketchcards to be given away by participating artists (while available)
    • Trade sketchcards with other collectors
    • Hunt for sketchcards in the Scavenger Hunt (you have to be a member of SCC for the Scavenger Hunt as clues will be posted within the SCC Facebook Group)
    • Have a chat with other collectors and show off your sketchcards collection
    • Sketchcards drawing sessions by SCC Members
    • You don't have to be an SCC member to participate
  2. Activities @ SCC Comics Exhibition
    • Comics Exhibition
    • Sketchcards Meet & Trade
    • Sketchcards Scavenger Hunt
    • SCC Members: The Gathering

These cards, measuring 2.5 x 3.5 inches each, will be traded or given away at STGCC, at the SCC Comics Exhibition Booth. Sketchcards are a popular off-shoot of trading cards and original art, and have garnered quite a following among comic fans. Sketchcards have overtaken mass-printed trading cards, as they offer another way for fans to acquire original art commissions from their favourite comic artists, that are far more affordable. The sketchcards created by SCC members will NOT be for / on sale at STGCC 2018.

SKETCHCARDS: An Overview

Sketchcards collecting is a constantly evolving hobby; New and creative ways of collecting are being discovered and are quickly catching on. Art is also, by nature, collectable, and the sketchcard or art card is, due to its size, perfect for collecting.

Sketchcards giveaways at Gnb Comic Shop, and Sketchcards discussion and Scavenger Hunt at a PanelGrapher Editorial meetup @ ScapeMedia.

The Sketchcards fit anywhere (even in your pocket), and can be displayed like any other collection, in an album or on a stand. Even though sketchcards are small, they have potential and gaining quite a following. And because they are small and affordable, it is possible for anyone to acquire original art from a wide range of artists, and styles.

Aspiring artists from SCC, whether they are professional or just love to draw, have started drawing popular comic characters from a wishlist drawn up by other members. Here are some sketchcards done by SCC members:

We are pleased to announce that SCC will be holding a Comics Exhibition at STGCC this year. With this exhibition, we hope to generate interest to make comics a larger and more important part of STGCC. The idea is to get fans excited to read comics again. The exhibition will showcase some rare slabbed comics around the theme of “First appearances of Movie/TV Heroes”. For fans of characters such as The Flash, Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Spider-man, Captain America or Wolverine, you can come see the issues where they appeared for the very first time - in some cases over 60-70 years ago. We hope to see you there at Booth No. FB7 (see STGCC floor plan below).

The Singapore Comics Community (SCC) would like to thank STGCC for making this presentation possible with logistics and other in-kind support.

*Photo shown is for promotional purpose only, actual exhibit will differ in display / content.

Comics Exhibition: An Overview

The Comics Exhibition will feature slabbed comics, from Golden Age (1938-1950), Silver Age (1956-1970), Bronze Age (1970-1985) and Modern (1985 onwards).

We feel that this would interest hardcore comics collectors and casual comic fans alike. Visitors will get to see and learn about key comics published from the 1940s to present. These valuable comics, some very rare, would no doubt add a unique dimension to STGCC 2018 and help it to stand out from other South East Asian conventions.

The comics that will be on show include Mega Keys: Journey Into Mystery #83 (1st appearance of Thor), Incredible Hulk #1 (1st appearance of the Hulk), The Avengers #1 (1st appearance of the Avengers), The Brave and the Bold #28 (1st appearance of Justice League of America), Incredible Hulk #181 (1st appearance of Wolverine), Fantastic Four #1 (1st appearance of the Fantastic Four), Amazing Fantasy #15 (1st appearance of Spider-man), Strange Tales #110 (1st appearance of Doctor Strange, Signed by Stan Lee), Avengers #4 (1st appearance of Silver-Age Captain America) and New Mutants #98 (1st appearance of Deadpool).

We hope you will enjoy the show as we did putting it together for you. See you there.

SCC presents a behind the scenes look at putting together probably the greatest comic book exhibition ever in Singapore. It would be a milestone in Singapore's comic book history. The question is: will you be there?

#SendMeLocation: SCC will be at Booth No. FB7, click image to zoom in.

Do visit the exhibition at STGCC to check out the comics in person, and bring along your friends. On top of the exhibition, we will have side activities like Sketchcards Meet and Trade, Mini-Workshops and Scavenger Hunt.

Here are some photos from our Original Comic Art exhibition last year:

We are pleased to announce that the Art Side and SCC will be holding an Original Comic Art Exhibition at STGCC this year. As many comic collectors are aware, original comic art is a growing extension of comic collecting. More and more comic fans are now collecting comic art, from sketches to blank cover art to commissions to published pages. In the upcoming Original Comic Art Exhibition, many types of such original comic art belonging to local comic art collectors will be on display. The original comic art we are referring to are original works drawn by artists on over-sized boards that are subsequently coloured, printed and made into comic books - i.e. the unique 'masters' and valuable one-of-a-kind pieces.

The Original Comic Art Exhibition will educate attendees on the various stages of production for a comic book and provide examples of the different types of original comic art, as well as showcase original X-men comic art through the decades and original comic art from past STGCC guests.

Featured artwork include those done by Todd McFarlane, Neal Adams, John Byrne, Walt Simonson, Arthur Adams, Adam Hughes, Frank Cho, Sonny Liew, Artgerm, Adi Granov and many others.

Do visit the exhibition at STGCC to see the pieces in person.

STGCC 2017 Floor Plan: The Original Comic Art Exhibition booth number is I1

Following up on last year's Original Art Exhibition, we feel this year it is appropriate to cover other aspects of comic collecting in order to cater to different types of collectors. The industry is constantly growing, expanding into new areas of collecting comics and comics-related collectibles. We hope to generate enough interest, making comics a larger and more important part of STGCC. The idea is to get fans excited to read comics again.

Comics collectibles can be categorised as follows:

  1. Singles
    • Slabbing / Grading
The exhibition will primarily be focused on rare Singles, as key issues are the rarest and most valued in comics. Comic collectors and fans alike are more likely to be interested to see these on display. The list further down the page gives a rough idea what we have managed to put together so far.
  2. Collected Editions
    • Tradepaperbacks / Hardcover
    • Omnibuses / Absolute Editions
    • Artists / Artifact Editions
We have yet to decide if we will showcase physical copies of collected editions, as they are readily available at Kino and many local comic shops. It is likely, however, that they will get a mention in the writeup. Having said that, if there's enough space to accommodate these, we would not be against putting them up.
  3. Digital
  4. Original Art
    We covered this last year.

As in 2017, the aim of this exhibition is to engage the public by educating / providing information about comics and the fun art of comic book collecting. SCC members would be there to take visitors through the exhibits like we did last year for the OA exhibition. We intend to have a few writeups put up as well, these would appear on A2 standees. Depending on the length of the writeups (and budget constraints), we might put some pieces together on a single A2 board, for example, "Grails and Why They are Important" and "Slabs and Why They are Relevant in Comics Collecting" could go well together. See under Sample Writeup / Educational Material for more information.

From the preliminary list of comics available for display at the exhibition so far, it could very well make this one of the first and largest gathering of Mega Keys at a South East Asian comic convention, if not the first and the largest. Here's the tentative list of comics we hope to showcase at this year's STGCC:

The comics owned by SCC members include Mega Keys: Journey Into Mystery #83 (1st appearance of Thor), Incredible Hulk #1 (1st appearance of the Hulk), The Avengers #1 (1st appearance of the Avengers), The Brave and the Bold #28 (1st appearance of Justice League of America), Incredible Hulk #181 (1st appearance of Wolverine), Fantastic Four #1 (1st appearance of the Fantastic Four), Amazing Fantasy #15 (1st appearance of Spider-man), Strange Tales #110 (1st appearance of Doctor Strange, Signed by Stan Lee), Daredevil #1 (1st appearance of Daredevil), Avengers #4 (1st appearance of Silver-Age Captain America), Silver Surfer #1 (Origin of Silver Surfer; 1st in solo series), Sandman #1 (1st appearance of Morpheus).

Plus other Bronze Age and more modern grails: New Mutants #98 (1st appearance of Deadpool), New Teen Titans #2 (1st appearance of Deathstroke the Terminator), Marvel Super-Heroes #18 (1st appearance the Original Guardians of the Galaxy), Nyx #3 (1st appearance of X-23), Batman Adventure #12 (1st appearance of Harley Quinn), Star Wars #1 (1st appearance Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, R2D2, C3PO, Stormtroopers) Amazing Spider-man #101 (1st appearance Morbius the Living Vampire), Captain Britain #1 (1st appearance of Captain Britain, Signed by Chris Claremont), Daredevil #7 (1st appearance of red costume), A-Force #1 (1st appearance of A-Force (Team), 1st appearance of Singularity), Han Solo #1 (1st in Solo series, signed by Harrison Ford), Saga #1 (1st appearance of Alana, Marko, Hazel), Marvel Team-Up #65 (1st appearance of Captain Britain in American Comics), Mighty Thor #700 (Death of Jane Foster and the return of Odinson as Thor, signed by Sir Anthony Hopkins), Ultimate Fallout #4 (1st appearance of Miles Morales, The Maker and Children of Tomorrow), Amazing Spider-man: The Movie #1 (Signed by Emma Stone), and Captain America #1 (2011) (Tolibao STGCC Variant, with Cap in front of the iconic Singapore Merlion). This secondary list might be trimmed down, or some replaced with rarer keys.

The comics that would likely be on display are shown below. We are open to suggestions for titles you would like to see featured as this is just a sample of our combined collections.
